Holland's golden generation lost their second World Cup final in a row. Sweden drew with Brazil but still finished last in their group. Argentina's Mario Kempes won the top scorer's award, while other stars in the tournament included Cubillas from Peru and Boniek from Poland.

France eventually became world champions for the first time ever after defeating Brazil in the final. Croatia played in its first World Cup tournament and surprisingly took bronze, with the team's star striker Davor Suker becoming the tournament's top scorer.

Sweden was drawn into what was known as the "Group of Death" along with Argentina, England and Nigeria. Sweden sensationally won the group after, among other things, Anders Svensson's classic free kick goal against Argentina. Brazil eventually won the World Cup gold medal and Ronaldo became the tournament's top scorer.
