Argentina's Mario Kempes won the top scorer's award, while other stars in the tournament included Cubillas from Peru and Boniek from Poland.

Some of the players who left their mark in the tournament were Cameroon's 38-year-old striker Roger Milla and Italy's unexpected top scorer Salvatore Schillaci.

    The 2002 FIFA World Cup in South Korea and Japan was the first World Cup to be played in Asia. Sweden was drawn into what was known as the "Group of Death" along with Argentina, England and Nigeria. Brazil eventually won the World Cup gold medal and Ronaldo became the tournament's top scorer.
